Northeastern's Marketing Department in the Office of External Affairs seeks an experienced, versatile, creative copywriter to manage a growing team in the creation of sharp, sophisticated marketing and brand content across a variety of audiences and platforms. This role is a great opportunity for an experienced copywriter who also understands marketing strategy and enjoys mentoring others. You'll get to contribute to creating a cohesive and compelling brand experience for Northeastern by setting the standards for clear, consistent writing and messaging. You'll help find new ways to creatively reach audiences. And you'll use your leadership experience to help build a collaborative, efficient in-house marketing agency able to nimbly oversee and lead a global knowledge brand like Northeastern.
This is a fit for someone who loves words and design and thrives working on a variety of projects. First and foremost, you need to be able to recognize and tell a compelling story in a variety of forms. You'll need to be able to write short, long, and everything in between, and be comfortable writing across channels and in a range of tones and styles. You'll need to be a sharp editor, and have a proven record of both managing writers on the core team, and directing writers with partner agencies and on marketing teams throughout the university.
There's no one background that makes you the perfect candidate, but you must be as-if not more-effective writing for digital platforms as for print. You'll need a solid understanding of website architecture, content strategy, UX writing, and the ability to think conceptually about copy. The role requires attention to detail, the ability to toggle a variety of projects, a knack for cutting through complicated topics and jargon, and a deep curiosity about a range of subjects and the writing craft itself. You should also be comfortable creating and delivering pitch presentations to get strategic and/or creative buy-in among leadership and stakeholders.
You'll ideally have five-plus years of deep knowledge of copywriting techniques including UX principles across platforms and devices, experience at a senior level for a large organization or for an advertising/marketing agency, and at least two years of management. You should also have a bachelor's degree and/or a master's degree, in English, journalism, creative writing, public relations, or a related field.
Excellent people skills are a must. Because Northeastern is a global university with locations in multiple countries, you'll need to be culturally aware, both in professional interactions and in the work you produce.
The ideal candidate is someone who:
Is a fast, clean writer and an efficient, incisive editor
Is both self-motivated and innately collaborative
Enjoys working with a variety of teams
Gives clear, effective guidance to the colleagues he or she manages and absorbs feedback eagerly
Learns the nuances of the Northeastern brand quickly
Is able to find valuable points of connection and alignment
Is flexible about shifting priorities and is entrepreneurial and resilient when faced with ambiguity
Nimbly adapts to new systems, knowing when it's necessary to ask for help and when it's appropriate to propose better ways of doing things
Embraces the cues provided by performance metrics, but still trusts his or her gut
Provides timely, effective feedback to team members
Inspires new thinking, skill-building, and collaboration
Contribute to content strategy for web properties across the university
Edit and write copy for new websites and website updates
Contribute to content outlines, site maps, wireframes, and copy decks
Oversee content QA
Collaborate with UX designers
Collaborate with stakeholders to align around marketing goals, strengths, and differentiators
Contribute to creative briefs
Contribute to concepts for marketing campaigns, including digital, out of home, radio, audio, email, and print
Coordinate and oversee campaign buildouts-social content, video scripts, landing pages, email campaigns
Provide quality assurance and consistency of messaging across campaign deliverables
Help build and oversee the editorial integrity of thought-leadership content aligned with institutional messages and priorities (including articles, graphics, video, radio and audio scripts)
Source tools and templates to optimize team efficiency
Manage content resourcing for various projects, including updates to team management tools
Conduct annual reviews, with regular quarterly check-ins, and development opportunities
Provide recommendations for additional scalable resourcing when needed
