Job Description The Boston University Study Abroad Director, Washington, DC Programs will oversee all aspects of the programs in Washington, DC, including, but not limited to, the key responsibilities outlined below. The person in the position reports to the Executive Director, BU Study Abroad and is expected to work closely with his/her staff as well as the staff of BU Global Programs and the Vice President and Associate Provost for Global Programs as appropriate. This is a twelve-month, full-time position located in Washington, DC.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Finances, Operations, Personnel (30%)
Finances
Oversee the operating budget for the program;
Keep the Associate Director, Finance and Operations updated on changes in Washington, DC's economic and financial policies, as they relate to the program;
Review and approve monthly expense reports prepared by staff in DC and submitted to BU Study Abroad;
Ensure that expenses are managed and that the operation is run in a cost-effective way;
Operations
Oversee the operational needs of the program as they relate to office space, equipment, furniture, and the like for the Center;
Ensure the compliance with local laws as they pertain to all aspects of operating in Washington, DC including registration of the program in Washington, DC, employee taxation, property regulations, and any other legal policies and procedures as they affect the program. Keep the Executive Director informed of changes in local legislation as they pertain to the program;
Work with the SA Director, Site Operations to track and report regulatory compliance per procedures set forth in the SA Compliance Guidelines.
Personnel
Supervise staff of the Washington, DC Program, including conducting annual performance appraisals and training staff as appropriate. Report any disciplinary or performance issues with staff to BUSA HR team in a timely fashion;
Work with the Boston University Study Abroad HR team on all hiring needs in accordance with BUSA Hiring Guidelines and on any other employment-related issues;
Academics (20%)
Establish the curriculum, working closely with BU Study Abroad and relevant faculty and staff of Boston University. All course proposals must be reviewed by the Director of Academic Affairs and approved by the relevant academic departments on campus.
Recommend appropriate faculty per faculty recruitment and hiring procedures outlined in the BU Study Abroad Hiring Guidelines;
Ensure the academic integrity of the program, enforcing the completion of course and faculty evaluations each semester and the academic success of the students;
Ensure the program is in compliance with all academic policies and procedures of Boston University, working in conjunction with the Director of Academic Affairs;
Report on the academic progress of the program, keeping the Executive Director updated on all issues related to grade inflation, student progress, course appropriateness;
Teach one course per year or more, as time permits, including the internship course;
Serve as mentor and advisor to students in the program. Meet regularly with students to assess their overall academic success and well-being in the program and communicate the above with staff on-site as well as BUSA Boston;
Student Life, Health and Safety (20%)
Oversee all aspects of health, safety, and student life for the Washington, DC Programs, including housing, excursions and other cultural activities, potential health and safety concerns with hosting US students in Washington, DC.
Through regular contact with students, monitor their overall well-being and communicate with staff on site and BUSA Boston if further help is needed;
Report all incidents that occur on site in a timely fashion to the SA Director of Site Operations and Global Programs' Associate Director for Health, Safety and Security.
Update emergency plans for the site annually and provide emergency contact information for students each semester as outlined in the SA Compliance Guidelines.
Marketing (10%)
Participate in and contribute to the University's effort in publicizing BU Study Abroad;
Act as liaison between Boston University and institutions and organizations in Washington, DC;
Foster alumni relations with graduates of the Washington, DC Programs and assist in the efforts of Boston University's Office of Development and Alumni Affairs as needed;
Program Development (10%)
Work with the Executive Director, and his staff, on any program development opportunities in Washington, DC;
Act as liaison between the Executive Director and affiliated institutions such as George Washington University, Johns Hopkins, and those associated with the Center, as well as partners on the BU campus;
Strategic Planning (10%)
Update the Executive Director on the presence of other providers operating in Washington, DC, make recommendations on areas of development;
Submit a report at the end of each semester outlining the highlights and issues of the program to the Executive Director;
Required Skills A cover letter is required for consideration.
Required Qualifications, Skills, Abilities:
Minimum Masters degree is required (Doctoral Degree preferred);
Teaching experience preferred;
Minimum eight years of strong academic and administrative experience, of which at least five years is experience managing the day-to-day operations of a department within a large, complex organization or small business;
Excellent managerial, communication and organizational skills in a cross-cultural environment are required, as are the ability to work cooperatively with senior administrators, faculty, students and staff; the ability to communicate professionally and clearly in writing and orally; the proven ability to manage people and projects effectively; and the ability to exercise sound judgment and appropriate response in emergency situations;
The incumbent must have the ability to build partnerships among constituents and manage competing priorities;
Additional information
Director, Washington DC Programs has contact with all co-workers and interested parties in the Washington DC program, including students, alumni, parents, staff, faculty, vendors, distinguished guests, community leaders, internship providers, etc. All interaction with the constituents must be professional and uphold the standards of the Boston University faculty and staff codes of conduct.
