About the Opportunity: The Privacy Attorney for Northeastern University is a new position reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for the university. This position will be an advisor to a number of departments across the university - academics, research, operations, enrollment and beyond - to help principals and users across the enterprise become aware, educated and up-to-date about the university's responsibilities in the privacy arena.
Responsibilities: Advise and counsel internal departments in the areas of domestic and international compliance in privacy and cybersecurity matters; review of existing privacy policies; update and drafting of internal policies and advise on privacy governance; participation in internal inquiries and investigations to assess corporate privacy compliance, data breaches, and preparedness and response capabilities.
Partner with all key business areas, in particular the legal, risk, research, finance and IT Security functions to ensure data privacy issues are considered at the outset of new projects, products and initiatives. Help manage the privacy network across all global offices.
Develop and maintain relevant global internal data privacy policies and training. Monitor the industry landscape to keep visibility on changes in laws within the US and abroad, and evolutions, trends, and best practices related to Privacy. Draft and negotiate privacy contractual terms for technology and other companies, including agreements for data processing, SaaS, and intellectual property licensing.
JD from a highly regarded law school.
Minimum 8-10 years' work experience as a regulator, practicing attorney within a top national or international firm, or sophisticated in-house department.
In-depth knowledge of and experience providing advice regarding privacy and data protection laws (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, state privacy and data security laws, marketing and advertising rules, etc).
Experience overseeing and approving privacy programs and policies.
Experience drafting and revising privacy aspects of contracts for technology transactions.
Excellent written and verbal skills; adept at communicating complex issues concisely and effectively with attorneys and partners.
Well-organized and detail-oriented with an outstanding work ethic; should be able to independently manage and successfully prioritize numerous projects under deadline pressure.
Strong interpersonal skills; can interact professionally and collaboratively with staff, attorneys, and clients.
Ability to identify legal issues and exercise sound judgment.
Has strong sense of accountability to mission of organization
