The Props Director leads the props area for Emerson Stage, the producing organization within the Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College. Emerson Stage produces up to ten mainstage productions each academic year. The Props Directors supports all Emerson Stage productions and the student designers assigned to those productions by supporting/understanding and actualizing conceptual goals of directors and designers in tandem with established budgets in order to achieve appropriate realized properties, supporting scenery and effects work for the productions. Strong budgeting and mentoring skills, plus the desire to work with students in a highly-ranked training program describe qualified candidates.
Props Director Supervises the Assistant Props Director and both are responsible for the supervision and mentoring of students who are assigned to carry out these tasks and projects in a timely, safe, and efficient manner. The Props area manages/maintains a large prop warehouse (offsite, located four miles from campus), coordinates community borrowing of our inventory and acquires props through rent, borrow, build or purchase for our own productions. The Props Director also maintains a digital inventory of the prop stock.
Props Director will also teach up to eight credits of classes per academic year as well as be a guest lecture in additional classes and seminars.
Please note: This position is needed full-time for nine (9) of the twelve months of the year (when our students are on campus.) To ensure you receive benefits and a salary throughout the year, we pro-rate this position. Meaning, we consider it to be a part-time position for the college because you are not working for three months of the year. Therefore we take the full-time equivalent salary (seen at the bottom of this job description) and multiply by .75 (because you would be working for 75% of the year, but being paid over the whole year.)
Responsible for the upkeep of the properties shop, tools, equipment and inventory
Work with Production Manager to hire and supervise overhire properties artisans
Collaborate with artistic and production personnel working on a show to establish and fulfill their prop needs (weaponry, special effects, etc.)
Read all rehearsal and performance reports and follow up with timely repairs and supplies as needed; collaborate with run crew to maintain properties throughout each production process
Responsible for the strike, return, restocking and proper storage of all properties and set dressing immediately after the closing of the show
BA degree with 3 years professional experience.
Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, prioritize.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Detail oriented with excellent follow-through.
Experienced with Word, Excel, Google Drive, Google Sheets and Photoshop;
Familiar with or able to learn additional computer software (database programs, design software, calendar/scheduling programs, email programs, etc.)
